Con más de 160 años de
historia, el Teatro Romea es uno de los referentes culturales más importantes
de la ciudad de Murcia. Ubicado en pleno casco histórico, el edificio se
construyó en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, con el afán de incorporarse a
la renovación escénica, que ya se estaba produciendo en las principales ciudades
españolas, y con el objetivo de albergar las representaciones teatrales que
contaban con una larga tradición en la capital de la Región.
De inspiración
neoclásica, la monumental fachada del teatro se caracteriza por un estilo
ecléctico, en la que también aparecen detalles modernistas como la marquesina
y las verjas de forja que adornan la entrada. Tres bustos de grandes mçusicos:
Beethoven, Mozart y Listz, encabezan la parte superior de la fachada,
destacando así el carácter de este edificio dedicado al fomento de la
cultura.
El teatro, desde
su creación, ha pasado por diversas rehabilitaciones motivadas por los
incendios sufridos en el siglo XIX. Entre las restauraciones más recientes
destaca la de 1985, en la que el Teatro Romea fue pionero en iniciar una
serie de reformas que, posteriormente, se realizaron en la mayoría de los
teatros nacionales.
Desde entonces,
el Teatro Romea ha mantenido una programación estable y ha sido uno de los
centros más importantes de la actividad cultural en Murcia. Tras un cierre
temporal, el escenario volvió a recuperar su puesto en la vida de la sociedad
murciana, con unas excelentes condiciones técnicas y de confortabilidad que
permiten disfrutar al máximo de todas las posibilidades que ofrece este
histórico escenario.

With
160 years of history, Teatro Romea is one of the most important cultural
venues in the city of Murcia. Located in the very heart of the old town, the
building was erected in the second half of the 19th century, at a time when a
theatrical revolution was taking place in the main cities across Spain, in
order to host plays and performances with a long tradition in the capital of the Region.
Of
Neoclassic inspiration, its monumental facade is characterized by an eclectic
style with Modernist details, such as the marquee and the wrought iron gates
at the building's main entrance. The busts of three great musicians (Beethoven, Mozart and Liszt) adorn the top of the front facade, stressing
the building's purpose of promoting culture.
The
theater has undergone refurbishment several times since it opened, as a
result of the damages caused by fire in the 19th century. The most recent
renovation includes the pioneering reform project of 1985 that was
subsequently implemented in most other national theaters.
Since
then, Teatro Romea has kept a stable program of events and it has become one
of the most important cultural venues in Murcia. After a temporary closure,
the stage now recovers its past glory, with excellent technical facilities
and renewed comfort for making the most of the many possibilities offered by
this historic stage.
